Water Safety Tips for Your Dog
Many of our canine companions love to swim! It’s definitely a lot of fun for you and your dog, but make sure he stays safe. Use these tips from a Marietta, GA veterinarian to do just that:
Never let your dog swim alone—it’s always safest to be in the water with your dog, providing support if needed. Even dogs who are experienced swimmers can be caught off guard by ocean currents, and they may need assistance getting out of the backyard pool.
Don’t Drink the Water
Whether swimming in a pool, lake, or the ocean, make sure your dog doesn’t drink the water that he’s immersed in. Chlorinated pool water isn’t good for your pooch, and salt water will only dry out his mouth and make him thirstier. Bring along a thermos of fresh water just for your dog during swimming time.
Rinse Out the Coat
Leaving sand, salt, or chlorine in your dog’s coat will dry out and irritate the skin, and may also lead to increased shedding. Rinse out the coat with fresh water from the garden hose.
