Vaccine Basics for New Pet Owners
Are you new to pet ownership? Vaccinations are important in your pet’s early stages of life to set them up for lifelong health. Here, your Roanoke, VA veterinarian goes over the basics of pet vaccinations.
Almost every pet will require what are called the core vaccines, so named because of the dangerous and/or contagious nature of the diseases they prevent. Some examples of core vaccines include those that protect against distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis, and rabies. The core vaccines are often administered together in a batch.
As the name implies, non-core vaccines might not be recommended for every pet. They might help some, though, based on factors like exposure risk, location, etc. The Lyme disease vaccination is just one example. Ask your vet what sorts of non-core vaccines your pet might benefit from.
Most pets can receive the initial round of vaccinations as early as about eight weeks of age. Booster shots will be necessary in yearly or multi-year intervals as your pet ages; these keep vaccinations effective so that diseases continue to be held at bay.
