How to Tell if Your Pet is Overweight

Many of our animal companions—nearly half!—are overweight. How do you tell if your pet is carrying too many pounds or if they’re just stocky? Here, your veterinary clinic Livonia, MI offers a few tips.

The Visual Inspection

Inspect your pet from the sides and top. Are they bulging out near the stomach? Is there a bulge hanging down around the back hips, where there should be a gentle curve upward? Cats, in particular, tend to accumulate extra fat around the neck. Signs like these indicate that your pet is, in fact, carrying around too much weight.

Research online to find out what the proper weight range is for your particular pet’s breed and age. Now, weigh them on the scale. If they’re far above the recommended weight limit, it’s time to take action!

Veterinary Visit

The best way to see if your pet is overweight, and to start getting them the help they need, is to visit your vet’s office. Your veterinarian can confirm whether or not your pet is in fact overweight, and help you develop a diet and exercise plan for your companion.
