Myths About Our Feline Friends

Cats tend to be aloof, independent, and somewhat mysterious. Maybe that’s why people believe so many myths about them! Below, your Aurora, CO veterinarian sets the record straight on these three misconceptions:

Cats Always Land on Their Feet

This simply isn’t true. While cats are quite graceful, they can slip, fall, and injure themselves just like any animal. Veterinarians even have a slang term for injuries sustained from falls: high-rise syndrome. Shorter falls are often more dangerous, because cats may not have time to right themselves before impact.

Cats Love Milk

This is a half-truth; cats may love milk, but it’s not good for them. It turns out that most adult cats don’t possess enough lactase in the gut to digest lactose, milk’s primary enzyme. This means that the majority of cats are actually lactose-intolerant. Drinking too much milk will likely result in vomiting and diarrhea.

Cats Purr When Happy

This one is also half-true. Cats may purr when happy, yes, but experts believe that purring can indicate a variety of other emotions. Cats might even purr to express anxiety or anger!
