When Halloween comes around this year, it’s important to keep your pet’s safety in mind. Halloween is one of the most dangerous times of the year for pets! Learn about the most common hazards below from your Marietta, GA veterinarian.


Chocolate, as you most likely know, is a dangerous hazard for our cats and dogs. It contains chemicals that don’t agree with pets, and even small amounts can cause harm. In addition, all types of chocolate—milk, semi-sweet, dark, white, baking chocolate, powdered chocolate, etc.—is dangerous.


Many candies, as well as gum, toothpaste, and other household items, are often sweetened with an artificial sugar called xylitol. It’s fine for humans, but very bad for pets! Avoid vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and worse—keep pets far away from the Halloween treat bowl.


When the front door opens frequently for trick-or-treaters, your pet has a chance to slip out. If your animal friend is the type to dart out of the first open door they see, keep them secured elsewhere. Also make sure to identify your pet with ID tags and a microchip.
