Giving Cats Medicine

When your Niagara Falls, ON vet gives your cat a prescription, getting the cat to take the medicine can be difficult. Here are a few tips about giving medication to cats.

Liquid Medicine

Liquid medicine can be given in a syringe, eyedropper or bottle. Ask your Niagara Falls, ON vet which is best. Try to point it towards the cheek pocket and tilt the cat’s chin up to help him swallow.

Pills In Food

One way to give a cat a pill is to put it inside a treat designed for this purpose. If you don’t have that, try surrounding it with soft, wet cat food. Make sure to ask your Niagara Falls, ON vet if the medicine can be taken with food.

Pills Without Food

For pills taken without food, you may have to put it the cat’s mouth directly. Put your fingers at the corner of the cat’s mouth and gently press to open the mouth. Place the pill towards the back of the mouth, then stroke the cat’s throat to help him swallow. Give him water afterward to help him digest the pill.
