Don’t Believe These Cat Myths
Cats can be fairly mysterious. Maybe that’s the reason so many myths crop up around them! Here, your San Jose, CA veterinarian tells you about three common myths that you shouldn’t believe.
Cats Always Land on Their Feet
Cats, while graceful, don’t always land on their feet. In fact, veterinarians have a term—high-rise syndrome—for when pets sustain injuries from falling off of ledges or windowsills. If your cat spends time near a window, make sure it has a sturdy screen to prevent falls.
Cats Love Milk
This is only partially true; cats may enjoy milk, but it’s not good for them. The vast majority of adult cats are lactose intolerant, meaning they can’t digest milk and dairy products properly. In fact, drinking too much milk will cause cats to experience vomiting or diarrhea.
Cats Purr When They’re Happy
This one is also a half-truth. Cats may purr when they’re happy and content, but experts believe that purring also indicates a variety of other emotions, including negative ones like anger, stress, and irritation.
