Your Dog’s Separation Anxiety
Separation anxiety is a huge issue with many dogs all over. Dogs are primarily pack animals and thus are incredibly social. If you have any concerns about your dog’s anxiety, please check with your Thorold veterinarian. Here are some tips for dealing with it.
Work to build your dog’s confidence at home. Work on basic tricks and commands. With anxious dogs, you should always give positive motivation such as praising and treats. This will help your dog to deal with being alone by having a better overall demeanor and feeling of accomplishment – not much different than humans!
Make sure that space is familiar. Reinforce it with treats and toys. This will help your dog to be more comfortable. Your Thorold veterinarian can help with advice for this.
You can actually work with your dog on independence training. Start by leaving your dog alone in a room by itself. Start with only a few minutes, then praise the dog when you return. Steadily lengthen this to 30 and 45 minute increments.
This will all help immensely with separation anxiety. For any questions, contact your animal hospital thorold.
