Choosing a Leash for Your Dog
Just about every dog will need a good leash. With the variety of leash choices out there, how do you know what to purchase? Here, your Ellicott City, MD vet offers a crash course:
The Standard Leash
The standard leash will work well for most dogs. It’s about six feet long, made of nylon, leather, or another synthetic material, and has a loop at one end for your hand and a metal clasp at the other to attach to your dog’s collar.
Retractable leashes have a spring-loaded handle that allow your dog to walk away from you a bit farther to explore on their own. You’re able to stop their movement by pressing a button, which stops the leash from unwinding any further. Retractable leashes work well for many pet owners, but use caution; it’s possible for your dog to get away from you before you know it!
Training leashes may be made of special materials or be extremely short or long. Unless you’ve been advised to use one by a veterinary professional or animal trainer, you probably won’t need one.
