Just to refresh your memory, Ashley Madison suffered a massive security breach in 2015 that exposed over 300 GB of user data, including users’ real names, banking data, credit card transactions, secret sexual fantasies… A user’s worst nightmare, imagine having your most private information available over the Internet. However, the consequences of the attack were much worse than anyone thought. Ashley Madison went from being a sleazy site of questionable taste to becoming the perfect example of security management malpractice.
It was at that moment that I decided I was going to have an affair. I didn’t want to confront him about it.
I became interested in the inner lives of such women, women rebelling against the constraints of monogamy or refusing to be married in the usual way. One woman, having heard about my interest, offered to tell me about her experience on Ashley Madison, a dating app designed for married people seeking out affairs. There was an element of excitement and danger, but alongside that were feelings of loneliness, insecurity, isolation, and shame, the same feelings that made her want to cheat in the first place. The Impact Team announced the attack on 15 July 2015 and threatened to expose the identities of Ashley Madison’s users if its parent company, Avid Life Media, did not shut down Ashley Madison and its sister site, “Established Men”.

That said, the mere fact that a person’s data was included in the leak does not mean that they used the site to have an affair, says Tod Beardsley of information security firm Rapid 7. “For starters, it’s trivial to set up a fake account on Ashley Madison, since Avid Life Media’s (ALM’s) account setup procedures encourages, but does not require, an e-mail address to be verified by the user. This might be done for a variety of reasons by actors ranging from pranksters to bitter divorce rivals. CTO Ruben Buell said he was hired to repair both the company’s image and technology, revamping the entire data security architecture of the site. From photo sharing (photos can be made blurry or only shared using a private key), to calling customer service (reps pick up the phone with a generic greeting), to billing (receipts don’t mention Ashley Madison), every part of the website has been designed to take the stress out of online cheating.

The minimum purchase is 100 credits, at 0.49 cents each. When you buy 500 credits, the price per credits drops to 0.29$, and a purchase of 1000 credits will cost 240$ or 0.24$ per each credit. Each message costs a gentleman 5 credits.
Understanding its members’ needs for privacy, Ashley Madison did not require an email to be confirmed before the account could be used, leading to some members signing up with obviously false emails (such as “[email protected]”, an address that doesn’t exist), and others gave emails that weren’t their own, such as the multiple accounts created with “[email protected]”. The women who spoke to me did so on the condition of anonymity, specifically to protect their spouses. She interviewed dozens of Ashley Madison users for her 2017 book, The Secret Life of the Cheating Wife, and found that the majority were “cheating to stay.” Like Lindsey, they weren’t looking for a new partner, just looking to outsource their sexual pleasure. Last year was the first since the hack that Ashley Madison saw “substantial growth” in its user base, Buell said, adding that its 2017 revenue grew 5 percent globally and 16.7 percent in the US compared to 2016.
